Zimbabwe Project

The generosity of our donors to the Zimbabwe Project enabled us to send US$ 8,583 to the Franciscan Missionary Sisters for Africa in Mutare, Zimbabwe recently. These donations helped the many victims of the terrible cyclone which hit Mozambique, Malawi & the Eastern part of Zimbabwe in late March. Sister Eunice told us “your loving support, concern & care gave us the courage to reach out to the most vulnerable. Gives me great hope and joy. Every blessing to you & all your friends.”

If you would like to help with this project, please write a cheque to “Franciscan Missionary Sisters for Africa”, give to Marianne Czerwinski, or to Michael Redding. Alternatively, contact Marianne or Michael through the parish office. Thank you very much for your support.

Our Common Home: Let us please Save the Amazon – the Lungs of the Earth”

Second Sunday in Lent: March 8 – International Women’s Day.
Yesica: a voice that reverberates from the Amazon to the Papal Synod.

Yesica Patiachi Tayori of the Peru’s Harakbut Indigenous community, at the Synod of Bishops for the Pan-Amazon Region in October 2019, said, “We, the Indigenous peoples, have been, are and will always be the guardians of the forest. But caring for our common home is everyone’s responsibility, not just that of Indigenous peoples.” Development and Peace’s partner, the Amazonian Centre for Anthropology and Practical Application (CAAAP), helps the Indigenous peoples of the Amazon ensure that their rights and territories are respected.

On this International Women’s Day, let us salute the courage of women like Yesica, who bravely lead the defence of the land, water and people. Watch Yesica’s testimony at devp.org/campaign/yesica.

Development and Peace – Caritas Canada: Climate Change

Let us together Save the Amazon At the conclusion of the November 2019 Papal Synod on the Amazon as a central part of the Vatican’s Climate Change strategy, Pope Francis declared “The Future of the Amazon is the Future for All”. The Amazon produces 20% of the world’s oxygen and contains 50% of the Earth’s fauna and flora. It is a major absorber of our planet’s green house gases, which produce global warming. Yet the Amazon area and its 380 indigenous peoples are being wantonly destroyed by indiscriminate mining, oil exploration, deforestation, hydroelectric dam building and targeted killings. In the last few years alone, 20% of the forested areas have been eliminated. Please join us at Development and Peace – Caritas Canada – by signing our Solidarity letter of support to save the Amazon and its peoples in their struggle to sustain the Amazon – the “Lungs of the Earth”.

The signature letters will be received in both Ottawa and Brazil. Covenant House Vancouver Plea: Make a one-time gift for homeless and at-risk youth.

Gifts of the Little Magi (Sunday, Jan 5, 2020).

When we celebrate the Feast of Epiphany on Sunday, January 5, we would like to encourage the young children to bring a birthday gift for baby Jesus and present this during the Offertory.

This is a wonderful opportunity for the children to wrap a present for baby Jesus and give Him homage like the Magi. An item of baby clothing or toiletries like baby wipes and diapers would be most appreciated. The presents gathered will be given to BirthRight
Vancouver in support of their ministry to women and their infants.

Jesus thanks you! Please contact the Parish Office at parish.smark@rcav.org if you have any questions.

A Gold Mass for scientists will be celebrated at St. Mark‘s Church, UBC, on Friday, Nov. 15, at 5:30pm with Archbishop J. Michael Miller, CSB, as celebrant.

The Gold Mass began as an initiative of the U.S.-based Society of Catholic Scientists which exists to ―witness to the harmony between the vocation of scientist and the life of faith.‖ This Mass follows in the tradition of special Masses for members of a particular
profession.

The colour gold reflects the colour of the hoods worn by
those graduating with a Ph.D. in science and because St. Albert the Great was an alchemist who worked to turn base metals into gold. Light refreshments will be served after Mass.

All are welcome to attend.

Development and Peace – Share Lent Campaign
Share the Journey: Let’s Share the Culture of Encounter.

Pope Francis himself guided the selection of this year’s Share Lent theme, that we are members of the One Human Family called upon to ‘walk in the shoes of others,’ sharing the journey of the 68.5 million refugee migrants fleeing persecution, exploitation, natural disasters and abject poverty.

Together with Climate Change, this crisis has been deemed as the most critical issue currently facing our Human Family. In spite of the overpowering numbers, we must see in each migrant the face of our very Lord Jesus who was himself an infant migrant to Egypt.

This year we humbly request your caring support during the Lenten Season by committing to the following actions:
– Be informed. Pick up a Mini-magazine & read one of the real human stories. See how your kind help does make a difference
– Be prayerful. Pick up a Prayer Card and use your power
of prayer to help bring aid to our needy brothers and sisters
– Be generous. Your financial donation supports our local
partners working in the field. For example, through you, D&P working with its local partner has aided 100,000 Rohingya people by providing some basic pressing needs like food, shelter & sanitation
– Join a symbolic solidarity walk, to be detailed later

D&P humbly requests yet again your customary generosity during the Lenten collection.

The Week of Prayer of Christian Unity is celebrated on January 18-25 and is organized by the World Council of Churches.

The theme for this year is “Justice and only justice you shall pursue” based on Deuteronomy 16:18-20.

The Christian communities of the University of British Columbia and its affiliate institutions cordially invite people of faith to come together in order to pray for the great task of bringing people together during the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity.
Join us for a time of prayer and fellowship. You are very welcome to invite your friends and family.

Sermon to be delivered by Alecia Greenfield, Salal and Cedar (Watershed Discipleship) Anglican Church Chancellor’s Scholar, Vancouver School of Theology

The Order of Service is jointly prepared and published by the Pontifical Council for Christian Unity and the Commission on Faith and Order of the World Council of Churches.

“The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity 2019 has been prepared by Christians from Indonesia. With a population of 265 million, 86% of whom are reckoned to be Muslim, Indonesia is well known as having the largest Muslim population of any country. However, about 10% of Indonesians are Christian from various traditions. In terms of both population and the vast extension of the country Indonesia is the biggest nation in South East Asia. The nation is founded on five principles called Pancasila, with the motto Bhineka Tunggal Ika (Unity in Diversity). Across the diversity of ethnicity, language and religion, Indonesians have lived by the principle of gotong royong which is to live in solidarity and by collaboration.

This always fragile harmony is today threatened in new ways. Much of the economic growth that Indonesia has experienced in recent decades has been built on a system that has competition at its heart. This is in stark contrast to the collaboration of gotong royong.

Corruption is experienced in many forms. It infects politics and business, often with devastating consequences for the environment. In particular, corruption undermines justice and the implementation of law. Moved by these concerns, the Christians of Indonesia found that the words of Deuteronomy, “Justice, and only justice, you shall pursue …” (see Deut. 16:18-20) spoke powerfully to their situation and needs. Before the people of God enter the land God has promised them they renew their commitment to the Covenant God established with them.”

Come for a wonderful time of prayer and song!
Food and reception to follow!
